Mz Bratt Interview

To celebrate our ten of the most powerful women in the music industry campaign we did a brief interview with Mz Bratt, the second on our list and one of the female UK artists flying the flag for the females in the current market.

BE REAL AND TEACH TRUTH IS WHAT BRATT STANDS FOR, WHERE DID THIS COME FROM? DID THAT ACRONYM COME AFTER YOU DECIDED TO CALL YOURSELF THIS?

My big sister used to call me a brat coz i was cheeky and a bit of a brat when i was a kid, I made up the acronym after that when i started to think about what i wanted to represent as an artist..

WHAT MUSIC DID YOU LISTEN TO GROWING UP?

My mum used to play a lot of garage and jungle and my dad was in an Acid House sound called Spiral Tribe, i used to listen to all the grime guys on Deja Vu FM – Wiley , Dizzee etc… Mobb Deep, Wu Tang things like that..

WHAT MADE YOU GET INTO THE ART OF RAPPING AND FOLLOWING A CAREER IN MUSIC?

I was always good at English and I love music and putting words together so it came from that.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR?

Bestival, Love Box all the festivals i’ve done, Performing at Notting Hill Carnival and all the places i’ve been able to travel to with my music, US, Europe and I’ve just got back from Japan.

WHERE CAN YOU SEE FEMALE RAP HEADING IN THE UK?

I think the girls are as good as the guys now so we’re making movements for sure.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SEE COMMENTS ABOUT YOUR LOOKS ON YOUR VIDEOS AND NOT YOUR MUSIC?

I don’t mind unless it’s people being creepy or pervy, I think people underrate me because they think i’m just pretty and don’t listen to the lyrics..

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO IN THE CURRENT MARKET?

I Like Drake, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lemar, Angel’s a sick writer..

WHO ARE YOUR FEMALE INSPIRATIONS IN MUSIC?

Ms Dynamite, Lauryn Hill definitely..

HAS YOUR FATHERS WORK INFLUENCED YOUR CAREER?

Yeah definitely because he used to take me with him so I saw him performing at big festivals and got to see an alternative way of life.

HAVE YOU, OR WOULD YOU COLLABORATE WITH YOUR FATHER ON A SONG?

He still makes house music and he’s always telling me to jump on one of his beats, maybe one day i will….

WHEN YOU WENT ON T4 FOR THE FIRST TIME THEY WEREN’T INTO GRIME MUSIC WHICH YOU WERE DOING AT THE TIME, HAVE YOU FOUND YOURSELF MOVING AWAY FROM GRIME TO WORK WITH THE MAINSTREAM OR HAS IT BEEN A NATURAL CHOICE?

I think i’m just growing musically and trying new things, I’m still gonna have grime elements to my songs but i love hip hop, jungle, garage, everything..

YOU STARTED PERFORMING WHILE IN SCHOOL, HOW DID MUSIC AFFECT YOUR SCHOOL LIFE?

It was a hobby those times so we used to freestyle in the class room and enter talent shows and stuff.

HOW HAVE THE MALE ARTISTS TREATED YOU IN THE INDUSTRY?

Most are cool, you get some who are a bit sleazy. .

HAVE YOU STUDIED THE HISTORY OF CLEOPATRA THE EGYPTIAN QUEEN, IS THAT WHO YOU WERE NAMED AFTER?

My Dad just liked the name, i’ve studied a little bit..

TOURS HAVE BEEN AN INTEGRAL ROLE TO YOUR SUCCESS. WHAT DOES THE TOUR ENVIRONMENT DO FOR THE WAY YOU APPROACH THE MUSIC YOU MAKE?

I love performing and getting to meet my fans, you also see what works and what doesn’t so it helps knowing what’s working for me, like everyone loved ‘Selecta’ so i’ve done ‘Rocket Launcher’ and ‘Blow Your Whistle’ to give the fans more of what they want.

WHICH OF YOUR PEER FEMALE MC’S IMPRESS YOU THE MOST WITH THEIR WORK?

All of them.

WHAT IS IN THE PIPELINE FOR YOU?

I’ve got my own stuff coming out plus features with Loadstar and Danny Byrd that I’m excited for people to hear.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FEMALES WANTING TO GET IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

Work hard, network, be nice to everybody.
